Toyota unveiled its next generation Land Cruiser on Wednesday. Known internally as the 300 series, it is arriving in most markets as the 2022 model and is expected to start shipping this summer. However, the new Land Cruiser won’t make it to the US

The Land Cruiser was long overdue for a redesign. The outgoing 200 series has been on the market since the 2008 model year. The SUV remains body-on-frame but now rides on a new GA-F platform, which Toyota says reduces the vehicle’s overall weight by 440 pounds, with a lower center of gravity.

Vehicle length, width and wheelbase as well as the approach and departure angles are the same as before for most of the equipment variants, according to Toyota. The styling hasn’t changed much either; The main differentiator is large air vents that flank the grille.

To reduce emissions, the Land Cruiser replaces its traditional V-8 engine with two V-6 engines with twin turbochargers. A 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 develops 409 hp and 871 lb-ft of torque, while a 3.3-liter turbodiesel develops 304 hp and 938 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota equipped the new Land Cruiser with its Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) adaptive damping system to improve on-road performance. Multi-Terrain Select driving modes and a multi-terrain monitor camera system are designed to aid in off-road driving.

Also new to the tech front is the Toyota Safety Sense package of driver aids, which is already standard on most of the automaker’s other models. In the Land Cruiser, it includes automatic emergency braking (front and rear) and a crash avoidance function designed to help the driver avoid obstacles.

Toyota previously confirmed that the Land Cruiser will leave the U.S. after the 2021 model year. A special Heritage Edition of the expiring 200 series serves as a farewell greeting.

However, the Land Cruiser’s Lexus LX-Twin is expected to live on with a turbo V-6 instead of the current 5.7-liter V-8 engine.
